Olandese Volante

The production of RRH sometimes passes through the artistic commission and I think it is fair to address this topic in a serious and in-depth way.

When I am contacted to discuss a commission, usually via the web or social networks, I often don’t know the other person, I don’t know anything about him/her; then they often ask me to paint something to give as a gift, as in the case of this painting, and clearly it becomes complicated, as I have to put in something more than usual.

So, empathy comes into play.

Il filo rosso del destino RRH037-2020

The client asks me for a subject or a theme and, to develop it, I need to enter the mind of this person to create an atmosphere.

So, we start talking about art, music, experiences, we talk about many things and, if we get in tune and I start to create a shared imagination, I decide whether I will be able to meet their expectations or not, because I like to put in the paintings stories and my emotions and the ones whose those who requested the work.

It is not easy and occasionally I decide that I am not the right person to do that: I think sometimes it is a great form of respect even to refuse and address them to those who, in my opinion, could satisfy the request in a better way.

In the case of this painting, we immediately got in tune.

Il filo rosso del destino RRH037-2020
Il filo rosso del destino RRH037-2020

I will not obviously tell you the story behind it, out of respect for the client and the third person to whom it was eventually given: it is a story of personal emotions and I will keep his creative conception for me; but while he was talking and telling his story, my mind created a series of images and sensations that led me to create this subject.

This is my way of working with commissioned works: inside them you can find me, but also “other”, and I think it’s wonderful to create mental synchrony with people I often don’t know.

Die Toteninsel

Die toteninsel RRH034-2020

For some time, I had been thinking about proposing my own re-interpretation of this painting, of which the author himself produced various versions.

At first, I thought of a quote and sketched the island on the horizon of a black sea: I wanted it to be there, to represent a point of arrival, a destination for someone who, in the foreground, would slowly approach on a boat; but the more I sketched out, the more the island grew, I could not center the size and it grew and grew.

When I finally felt satisfied, I didn’t realize that she had taken the whole table and, as is my custom, I let her be in charge and from a quote it became a tribute.

Die toteninsel RRH034-2020
Die toteninsel RRH034-2020

My “Die Toteninsel” – I like to call it by its name in the original language – towers mightily over in the middle of the black sea that reflects a red and cloudy sky, as if it were about to rain blood soon; but the gray stone of the rock refuses to accept that reflection and maintains its cold otherworldly flash.

The gray walls of rock surround a dense thicket of darker than normal cypresses: they do not reflect the light, but absorb it and stand upright and judging. They represent the element that has always captured my eye: the dark, the unknown.

The island appears gloomy and disturbing also for another detail: the climbing red ivy that seems to be groping it like a parasite that come from who knows where and this is a quote from “The War of the Worlds” by H.G. Wells that I had recently re-read.

Die toteninsel RRH034-2020
Die toteninsel RRH034-2020

That climbing plant has always impressed me, it’s a kind of “Red Death” if you think about it. He is often seen along the walls of abandoned houses or tangled in dead trees and light poles, he suffocates the banks infested with brambles, coloring the hill with that anomalous dry red and gray that makes me think of the imminent arrival of winter.

Böcklin was so obsessed with the “Island of the Dead” theme that he painted it 5 times.

Die toteninsel RRH034-2020
Die toteninsel RRH034-2020

The first version seems to be titled “A quiet place”, then changed the title.

In fact, what the painter’s Island of the dead conveys to a feeling of restless tranquility.

Although, that subject does not “ring” to my ears when I look at it, I only hear silence and every now and then we all need silence, that’s why I like it.

Calm, silence.

I can’t match either my version to a musical mood, but while Böcklin communicates tranquility, calm and silence to me, mine communicates a silent restlessness, an omen…

Die toteninsel RRH034-2020

These days the painting will be varnished and framed and will finally be ready to go.

I liked measuring myself with the classic themes and I think it won’t be long before the next tribute.

Do you have any suggestions?

Which painting would you like to see reinterpreted in RRH style?

Barabba

Barabba RRH015-2020

Barabba is a raven born by mistake.

I had a whole other thing in mind, I swear.

I had this frame and a plywood board of the exact size.

The two were perfect together, but the tablet was treated with a very thick layer of glue.

I painted the background red and I already had my doubts because it didn’t dry well.

Barabba RRH015-2020

When it was time to draw the raven, I realized that the color was dripping: a surface too smooth, damn!

As I usually do, I abandoned the initial subject and let this water-repellent support decide.

Result: Barabba.

Demeter

Demeter RRH006-2020

The vessel with which Count Dracula made his voyage to the British coast.

The ship is at the mercy of the waves in the storm, its crew has been eliminated by the Count and there is no one at the helm, but a dark force pushes it towards the port of Whitby.

Demeter RRH006-2020
Demeter RRH006-2020

The Count who turned into a black wolf is ready on the bridge to take the leap that will lead him to start his new life in England.

The story of a Being who, however evil and bloodthirsty, faces the sea and his fears, in order to continue living.

Demeter RRH006-2020
Demeter RRH006-2020

The vessel is portrayed in the light of the full moon, the sails are lowered as if the last order given was to prepare for the storm.

The hull is unnaturally curved as if it’s about to break.

To the west the sky clears up and the Count knows he will arrive unscathed in Whitby.

Demeter RRH006-2020

This is a dark picture that praises the life that always wins.

This is the picture of 2020 that I love the most.

Santa Macabra Muerte

Santa Macabra Muerte RRH036-2020

The “Santa Macabra Muerte” is a piece that I adored making, I enjoyed doing it!

I love the contrast between the sheer/textured black and white and the golden background.

Santa Macabra Muerte RRH036-2020
Santa Macabra Muerte RRH036-2020

The idea was to have a bright background but as I often do, I “killed” all that light by curbing it with a black haze and allowed only a few rays to shine.

The frame is old, it was completely covered with brass and some parts were missing.

Santa Macabra Muerte RRH036-2020

I cleaned and then repainted the frame and then veiled it with red.

I liked the result very much and I think I will often use this finish for the frames.

Sleep Well

Sleep Well RRH035-2020

A rainy Sunday afternoon, autumn by now begun … I was very sleepy, and to overcome it I painted a sleeping woman.

The room is illuminated by the inevitable lunar presence that reveals hidden presences in the shadows.

Sleep Well RRH035-2020
Sleep Well RRH035-2020

Who are those presences?

Are they malicious or benevolent?

The spectator decides and interprets the scene and is personally called to unravel the mystery of the painting.

I recovered an old canvas as I often do, painted with materic acrylic; it was an abstract.

In these cases, I use the old painting as a preparation.

Sleep Well RRH035-2020
Sleep Well RRH035-2020

The frame, recovered too, was gilded and contained a gilded oval in its turn with the image of a Madonna.

I cleaned the frame, applied the silver leaf, and then, not satisfied, I preferred to apply a patina with the color first black and then red to resume the dark tones of the painting.

La seduzione della bestia

La seduzione della bestia RRH057-2020

The eclipse turns day into the night, so it is the moon this time that brings darkness and tries to swallow the scene with its dark cone.
